Yellow and Gray Cupcake Display {Wedding Cupcakes}

Gray is the new neutral and yellow is a perfect sunny addition. The color combination looks great used here on this wedding cake/cupcake display. The cake is clean and classic, allowing the yellow ruffle sugar with a vintage gray button flower to be the focal point. The cupcakes are also adorned with a gray vintage button. The white ceramic tree stump stand (from BHLDN) is the perfect piece to display them on. I fell in love with the stand the first time I saw it and felt it would be the perfect addition to a dessert table, used a cupcake stand (shown here), or to display a tiered wedding cake.

Green Army Men {birthday party}

When our good friend Stephanie from Stephanie J Designs told us the theme for her son's birthday was going to be green army men we were super excited. We created a 3-D green army men jeep cake, chocolate cake pops, chocolate chip cupcakes, vanilla medallion sugar cookies, and we found green army men gummies and green apple jelly beans to top it off. Stephanie with the use of star medallion tags, fun names for the treats, coordinating place settings and burlap table cloths pulled the whole party together. The treats were placed down the center of the table, instead of on a separate dessert table, it made for an impressive party table for the kids to eat and play at.

Stephanie came up with fun names for the treats, so chocolate cake pops became chocolate cake grenades.

my favorite snack were the star medallion sugar cookies we made. They were labeled "atomic sugar cookies"

instead of the traditional candy bags, we filled large glass mason jars with green army men gummies labeled "infantry" and green apple jelly beans labels "shrapnel"

The centerpiece to the party was the green army jeep cake (yes that is cake!) It was placed on a cake drum covered in raw sugar sand

I have to start by saying 2010 has been an amazing year for cakes. So after careful review of all the sculpted (3-D cakes, cakes you have to look at twice to know are cakes!) we created this year we selected what we feel are the best 10 of 2010. We had so many to choose from and the decision process was tough. We had to choose from a group that included a standing beer mug, a Lamborghini, guitar cakes, purse cakes, and even a 2 foot tall Hennessy bottle. We decided to choose cakes that not only are amazing to look at, but that we had never made before and challenged us in some way. So here they are.....

Raspberry, Apple Green and Damask {wedding cake}

Kristina and Justin's were married in April and their cake had it all! It was 5 tiers tall, but was made up of 10 separate cakes. It had a stenciled damask pattern in classic black and white mixed with quilted textured tiers. It had bursts of color with the use of an apple green covered tier and borders and raspberry pearl accents and bow embellishments. And to top it off a very elegant black acrylic initial topper.

I love this close up of the cake. It shows the damask pattern was also done on the cake board, the raspberry colored pearls accenting the quilting and the clean look of the stenciled damask.

Another detail of the wedding I loved and just had to share was Kristina's bouquet. Not only did she use some of my favorite flowers such as dahlias, kermit mums, and spider mums; the bouquet was embellished with a beautiful crown brooch.

I'm a big fan of kissing balls and these created by Visual Impact Design are fabulous with the addition of the hanging jewels. The kissing balls were also used as centerpieces on the tables and other places through the reception.

the seating chart made it easy for guests to find the name and table. A fun touch was to replace table numbers with movie titles, such as Top Gun and Sixteen Candles.

Pink Chandelier Wedding Cake {Rustic Elegance}

I just adored everything about Sarah and Josh's wedding this summer. It took place on the family's ranch and the reception was held in the barn. The walls were draped from floor to ceiling, chandeliers provided the perfect lighting, and the cake was placed on a wine barrel dressed up with hanging jewels. So when it came to designing the perfect cake to fit their rustic, yet elegant, wedding the couple asked me to look to their invitation for inspiration. I was super excited to see that Stephanie with Stephanie J. Designs was the genius behind the beautiful invitation suite.

From paper to cake: I incorporated the pink chandeliers and hanging jewels and pearlized the cake to match the shimmer of the paper.

Winter One-derland {First Birthday Cake}

This cute snowman, made of rice cereal treats and marshmallow fondant, was created for a little girl's first birthday cake. We were asked to create a winter wonderland cake with a snowman that matched her birthday dress. So we made a small 2 tier pink cake that has white "snow" blanketing the tops of the tiers. Then we added snowflakes, snowballs, bead borders, and a penguin. We used soft colors of pink and pale blue and added sugar flakes to the white snow for a bit of sparkle.

It is that time of the year again when we look to you for your support. Sweet Cakes by Rebecca will be selling our fabulous cupcakes to help raise funds and awareness for CancerCare for Kids from Sept 20 to Sept 26 They are an amazing organization that offers free, professional support to parents and children dealing with cancer.

For each cupcakes will sell at $2.50 we will donate $1.50.

For each half dozen we sell at $13 we will donate $10.00.

For every dozen we sell at $25 we will donate $20.00.

We have prepared a yummy variety of cupcakes to choose from and there is definitely a flavor for everyone.

The Menu

* Very Vanilla: Vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream and bright sprinkles

* Cookies and Cream: Vanilla cupcakes with Oreo cookies and cream frosting

* Pucker up: Lemon cupcake topped with a swirl of lemon whip and yellow sprinkles

*Rocky Road: Chocolate cupcake with walnuts and topped with a toasted marshmallow swirl

* Mochachino: Mocha cupcake filled with vanilla cream and topped with a swirl of vanilla buttercream and topped with caramel

* Scarlet: Red velvet cupcakes with vanilla buttercream and red sprinkles

* Razzle: Red velvet cupcake filled with raspberry and topped with a swirl of milk chocolate buttercream

* Pink Dream: Chocolate cupcake with pink vanilla buttercream and red sprinkles

* Decadence: Chocolate cupcake with rich fudge chocolate frosting and mini chocolate chips

Cranorange: Orange cupcake with cranberry filling and orange zest buttercream

Super Sweet 16 - Dessert Table

So when my niece celebrated her sweet 16th birthday I knew I had to give her the best cake ever. One problem, she is around the bakery and cake all the time, she has had almost every kind of cake we make and each year we make her cakes bigger and better. So this year we decided to make her a dessert table with a big variety of yummy treats sure to please everyone and most importantly her. We started with a very modern, graphic 2 tier cake and then took the color scheme and made matching cupcakes, mini cupcakes, sugar cookies, caramel covered pretzels, cake pops, and candy filled jars. I started with a color scheme of purple, black and white and then I threw in yellow and lime green. The horizontal black and white stripes are a fun background for the circle discs pressed with different textures. Those textured circles became the unifing theme for the dessert table. While I worked on the cake, Hector started to work on the cake pops and Rose started to make the sugar cookies, which we decided would also be on a stick.

I repeated the textured circle theme to decorate the wall behind the table. I took 12x12 pieces of scrapbook paper and cut various size circles out to be hung as the back drop. We added balloons to the sides and once all of the elements were on the table the finished look was nothing short of perfect!

In the back was grape flavored purple licorice whips, sour apple-o's, and giant jawbreakers. In the front was mini cupcakes (yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting), cookie pops decorated like whirly pops, an cupcakes topped with textured discs to match the cake and a pot of red velvet cake pops covered in white chocolate and purple and yellow drizzles.

The right side of the table...we repeated some of the treats for symmetry, but we did add banana laffy taffy, green sour candy and Hector's caramel dipped pretzels (knots and rods) with purple and yellow drizzle.

Ask Dr Bride!

We were honored to be asked by Dr. Bride herself to create yummy cookies for her launch party.

For those of you who are not familiar with Dr. Bride, she is an insightful woman with years of experience in the wedding industry who gives brides-to-be honest advice. She is not going to sugar coat things or tell you what you want to hear, but will tell you what you need to hear. It's a prescription that every bride should be taking. She is honest, compassionite, and so very real. I'm sure you can tell that I'm a big fan of hers!

So we created 2 styles of sugar cookies for the launch event. One was a hot pink and black pill and the other her very cool logo. See below for some step by step pictures and the finished products.

1. we have to size the cookie, make a template, then start rolling and cutting the dough.

2. next we print the edible images and cut each one to size. 3. then we must outline the baked cookies and flood them with yummy icing. 4. Once they are flooded we place on the edible image.

5. While the images were drying we finished flooding the pills and piped the Rx on each one. Those are now done and on to the last step of the logo cookies

6. We piped an icing border and then coated it with clear crystal sugar. (my favorite part)

These cookies were yummy and a big hit at the launch.

I Love the 80's - cake!

The best part of making this cake was our teams brainstorming session. It was so fun to remember the haircuts (flock of seagulls), the sayings (grody to the max), and the neon colors that were everywhere from sunglasses to paint splattered bandanas. All of us had a different approach to the cake so the list of possible items to include on the cake became very long. Some of the things that didn't make it on the cake were risky business sunglasses, snorks, Howard Jones, Beat Street, any of John Hughes movies, and hacky sacks. But this cake is an homage to all of those who are proud to say they cuffed their acid washed jeans, remember when MTV played music videos, and looked at life through slits in their sunglasses.

Yes that is a rubics cube (made from rice cereal treats) and pictures of Cyndi Lauper and Gem; I used to love watching Gem and always wanted to have wild pink hair! We also created a classic NES controller, the Thundercats logo, edible images of Miami Vice, The Goonies and Run DMC. The cake was just as fun to make as it is to look at and think " OMG! I remember ..."

Carvalho Family Winery Night of Unique Elegance

Last Friday nights event at Carvalho Family Winery was a blast. There were great vendors with amazing displays of food, flowers and table displays. There was music playing and fashion shows. And you know there were beautiful cakes to see. We showcased our hummingbird cake, our orange lotus cake (affectionately called "The Vermont" at the bakery) and our newest display cake the script cake. We also brought samples of red velvet cake with vanilla buttercream with our photo albums to share some of our previous cakes. Anyone thirsty for some cake!!!

Yes thirsty for cake. We have had so much fun creating cakes that resemble drink bottles and while we could make a soda can or bottle, or even a carton of milk, the requests we get are for alcohol bottles, cans and kegs. This is a cake we created for a birthday party at the Dream Ultra Lounge in downtown Sacramento. The Patron bottle cake stood 2 feet tall and the limes were 8" long. We use rice cereal treats for the cork, limes and salt shaker and hand painted the label. We also created a custom stand, which is a mirror, for the cake to sit on. But maybe your not into taking shots and prefer a mixed drink. Then this might be the cake for you.

This Hennessy Bottle cake stands about 14" tall and it serves about 20 people. We hand paint the bottle and label.

But don't worry all you beer drinkers, we got you covered as well!

This Hefeweizen Keg cake was painted with an edible metalic silver glaze and then the hand painted label was placed on the front.

And for those of you who like a bottle over a cup... We have a Corona bottle cake. This bottle stood 22" tall and it amazed even me. Complete with a lime wedge, made of marshmallow, the cake made you look twice and question the fact that it was cake. The bottle had a sheen on it that made the Corona bottle look like it just came out of the fridge. We painted the cake golden yellow and then gave it a pearl coat. We hand painted the label and the lime. I think the craziest part was delivering the cake an hour away from the bakery. But it made it to the party and was a big hit. But there is still the beer drinker who will grab a can over a bottle or cup, and we have made cakes for them too. We have not only made a single can , but also a case of beer cans.

Bridal Showcase 2010 - Cal Expo

This past weekend we attending the Cal Expo Bridal Showcase. The day was filled with meeting newly engaged brides and grooms and thier families and friends. There was so mush energy and excitement and our new display cakes were well received.

This year we decided to showcase cakes that have drama and color. We wanted to show want our abilities are with cake and sugar. We avoided the cake styles that we have done in the past with the thought that you can see pictures of cakes with scroll designs, ribbon borders, and quilting on our website. So we created brightly colored cakes, dramatic cakes, grand cakes, complete with a candy and dessert display.

We had 11 cakes on display, ranging in size from a 2 tier for 36 people up to a 5 tier for 204 people. We also brought for display cotton candy mini cupcakes in specialty papers, chocolate cake pops dipped in white chocolate, rice cereal treats covered and drizzled with chocolate and a variety of color cordinated candies. We also showcased our wide variety of cake stands, apothecary jars, dessert trays and custom made dessert tags. But we didn't stop there we also made sure that we didn't leave our visitors with an unfulfilled craving for cake, we provided tasting samples of white cake with raspberry preserves and champagne buttercream and red velvet cake with a bavarian cream filling and vanilla buttercream. Yummy!

The candy and treats smelled great and really stopped people in their tracks, but the cakes were what captivated guests to stay at our table, engage us with questions, take pictures, and of course sample cakes.

There were a couple of cakes that received the most attention for the day. The first being the cake we placed on the front corner of our table.

This a 4 tier square, serves 172 people, covered in ivory fondant and accented with chocolate brown and apple green details. Then it was finished off with green orchids, orange lotus, champagne dusted blossoms and chocolate brown curls. The table was decorated with sola wood balls.

The next best was the Queen of Hearts of cake:

This 4 tier round, serves 204, was covered in a stark white fondant and then accented with black diamonds spaced perfectly around each tier with red hearts. Another popular cake was our dramatic showpiece, it was a little bit vintage, a lot glamourous, and had a romantic pirate appeal to it.

This was agrand 5 tier cake with various height tiers, serves 204. It was covered in white fondant and then had one side stenciled with a delicate damask and the other side draped with horizontal pleats. The two sides came together with a ruffle sided strip complete with diamante studed buttons. The entire cake was given a pearl coat so it had a subtle sheen to it. Then the cake was completed with sterilized ostrich feathers, sugar peonies and hydrangeas. It had 3 beautiful plumes on top that made the cake over 2 feet tall. We displayed the cake on top a silver 18" square stand. It was a sight to see. Look to our future blogs for more angles and close-up photos of this amazing wedding cake.

The cakes are not the only thing that makes our bakery different from the others, its our great staff. We are a family owed bakery and so the show was also a family event. My sister Martha, niece Theresa, sister-in-law Violeta, niece Celia, brother-in-law Joe, my mother Marion, and close friends Vermont and Jasmine attended the show to help Hector and I. They handed out cards, helped answer questions, offer samples, bring brides to the table and give the best support. I can't thank them enough.

Wonderland Wedding

When people think of Alice in Wonderland images of the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit or Alice come to mind. For me I picture the Queen of Hearts and painting the roses red. I drew upon those ideas when I sketched out the Queen of Hearts wedding cake. The black diamonds and red heart accents remind me of the cards and the red roses, well of course they had to be incorporated in the cake. After bringing my vision to reality I began to look for photos to build a collage to show my ideas of a wonderland wedding fit for a queen.

I came across these amazing fashion collages on Polyvore. I think while they are not wedding images they represent the style I was thinking of when I created the cake.

Yellow and Gray Wedding Inspiration

I have been learning to use Photoshop to make photo collages to help inspire future brides. I have finally figured it out enough to be able to show off a wedding cake design of ours along with other coordinating wedding elements. This inspiration board was created to show one of the latest color combinations for weddings... yellow and gray. We created a 3 tier cake covered in a gray fondant and accented with white polka dots and whimsical yellow flowers. The design is modern and playful. The photos surrounding the cake are great ideas of how to incorporate the color scheme in all areas of your wedding. I really love the idea of photographing the rings on smooth gray rocks wrapped in yellow ribbons and the great gray clutch with the amazing broach.

Mad Science Birthday Cake

We had so much fun creating a mad science themed birthday cake for an awesome 5 year. The cake was an explosion of color, texture, and it was a feast for your senses. We included a rocket ship made of rice cereal treats, 2 boiling beakers also made of rice cereal treats, and atoms bursting of the cake on wires. There are chemical symbols, atom rings, green slime, and lightening bolts. Then we layered it with swirls of color, stars, and dots. Our inspiration for this design was fueled by the Mad Science party team. (http://www.madscience.org/) They come to your party and conduct experiments and entertain the kids while the teach. They have invitations you can use and also goodie bags for the kids. The birthday message and rocket close up. We cut out letters and then piped over them for extra color. We make our cakes to be viewed 360 degrees, so here is the back side of the cake. It also has full decoration with atoms bursting, atom string and chemical symbols. just another angle of the cake... We also created a smaller version of the cake for the birthday boy. He wanted a chocolate cake so we made him his own chocolate cake and the big cake was a tier of lemon and a tier of marble. We took the beaker from the top of the big cake down to picture with his cake.

Rock the Kasbah - 22nd birthday cake

We created this cake for a 22nd birthday party being held at the Kasbah lounge in Sacramento. We covered the cakes in a rich jewel tones and then piped a henna inspired design in gold. We added her name on the cake and then piped a scroll pattern on it and her age. The whole cake was pearlized and added hanging jewels to give it more sparkle.

Cupcake First Birthday

A couple of weekends ago we created 2 cakes that were very similar. We were requested to create a cake with a cupcake on top to match the baby's first birthday party decorations back in August. Then just about 2 weeks before we are set to make the cake a second request came in to create a cake with a cupcake on top, but this time they provided us with a picture for inspiration. Well the picture wasn't to much different from the cake we were already set to make. So we made 2 tiered cakes for the same day with a cupcakes on top for baby's first birthday. Black Damask Wedding

The past weekend had a theme to our cakes. We did a custom wedding cupcake tower and 4 tier wedding cake, both with a black damask theme. The differences were so subtle. One was white, hot pink and black the other ivory, pale pink and black.

The cupcake tower was inspired from Vanilla Bake Shop, they make incredible cakes in Southern California. The tower was made from Styrofoam dummy cakes, Masonite cake boards and PVC pipe. My wonderful hubby built it and with a lot of help from my nephew and niece, we made an incredible presentation for the cupcakes. The foam dummies were covered in white fondant and then stenciled with black royal icing, harder than you would think. The other tiers were covered in white or pink fondant. The cake on top was also stenciled with the royal icing.

The wedding cake was designed using the invitations as inspiration. It was 14", 10", 8" and 6" round cakes stacked, it served 152 people. The entire cake was covered in ivory marshmallow fondant and the bottom and 2nd tiers were stenciled with black royal icing. The top tier was stenciled with the motif that was found on the invitations and topped with a pink bow. The 3rd tier was wrapped with a 2 layer fondant ribbon and then in the front their custom monogram was hand painted. The cake was beautiful and the clients were happy, really that's all that matters.

It was full and very rewarding weekend.

Girly Skull Cake

The hot pink, black and white girly skull cake is one of the most requested cakes. The skull design is popular on clothes, shoes, purses and even school supplies. So I shouldn't be surprised that young girls want to have the coolest cake with the latest fad.

The cake has been done in different sizes and for a wide range of ages. Every time the cake is made something is done a little different to make the cake unique. It is a blend of the sweet with the hot pink and the edgy with the black.

Here a few of the cakes we have done with the girly skull... all black, hot pink and white.

Lady Bug baby shower cake

I took my inspirartion for this cake from a recent trip to disneyland. I am a huge fan of the Alice in Wonderland ride. The leaves have a similar look to the large oversized leaves of the exterior of the ride. Also the layered look of the flowers is my fun way of ceating fun and whimsical looking flowers. The lady bugs were the request of the expectant mother and the rest she left to my imagination. The topsy turvy tiers and the fun flowers are my strengths in cake decorating. When given creative freedom my cakes will have a whimsical look.
